Detailed microscopy reveals subtle changes to synapses in Fragile X Syndrome

Published May 2014

Researchers from the Patrick Wild Centre in collaboration with partners from the University of Bordeaux have used detailed microscopy to examine nerve cell junctions (synapses) in normal development and in fragile X syndrome.  They have shown that the changes to synapses in fragile X syndrome are much more subtle than previously thought and depend on age and which region of the brain is examined.  This research has been published in the Journal of Neuroscience; more information can be found here.
