Caregiver Views on Gene Therapy for Fragile X Syndrome overview

Background:
Recent years have seen multiple clinical trials for medications for Fragile X syndrome (FXS). An alternative approach, gene therapy, aims to address the root genetic causes of FXS. Although not yet tested in humans with FXS, it’s becoming a key area of interest. Given it can be controversial, it’s important to understand how families affected by FXS feel about these developments.

Study Method:
Researchers created a questionnaire with input from FXS caregivers to explore their knowledge, opinions, and feelings about gene therapy. It was filled out by 195 parents or caregivers, mainly from the UK and the Americas.

Key Findings:

  • Strong interest: 94% supported gene therapy trials.
  • Willingness to try: 67% would consider their dependant taking part in a gene therapy trial.
  • Age matters: Caregivers of dependents over 16 were less likely to consider it.
  • Mixed emotions: While many felt hopeful and excited, they also expressed concerns about unknown risks, the newness of the treatment, and side effects.

Conclusion:
Caregivers are generally positive and hopeful about gene therapy for FXS but remain cautious. Including their views is crucial when planning future research and trials.
